LA PRIMERA CAPILLA Y OTRAS PRIMICIAS DEL ASENTAMIENTO ESPAÑOL EN QUITO
Keywords:
First chapel of Quito, kallanca Inca, La Merced Convent, hispanic trace, Saint Francis of QuitoAbstract
The study includes several subtopics that are treated independently but as a whole it seeks to give a general vision of the topic related to the Spanish settlement in Quito during the colony. As such, it will be about the first chapel and the first cross. In this context, the metamorphosis of an Inca kallanca into a Catholic chapel will be explained. Then in the subtitle the Hispanic layout and the first main square, the relocation of this square that was initially La Merced to the location known today is discussed, and the process of locating land between the various religious communities. Also, other facts of the settlement of the Spanish and the pacification are reviewed; the coercive measures for the eviction of the lands of the natives, distributed to the Spaniards at the time of the refoundation of the existing devastated city by Rumiñahui, are exposed. In the theme of the first parishes, the designation of territories populated by indigenous people assigned to this or that religious order for its administration is exposed.
