Abstract

This article considers the important milestones of the Catholic Church in the second half of the 20th century, beginning with the Second Vatican Council, held between 1962 and 1965; To that extent, the historical context is reviewed with its social and political implications worldwide. The social, economic and political conditions that surrounded Ecuador during that period will be examined. At the same time, the Thomistic theological proposal will be compared, contrasting it with the conciliar theology, as well as the modalities of the diffusion of the doctrine in Latin America and Ecuador. The postulates of the Episcopal Conference of Medellín and the proposal of the Theology of Liberation will be reviewed. Reflection will be sought through the question What happened to the Second Vatican Council? The article ends with an approach to the current proposal, established by Pope Francis, in the 21st century
