The Unemployment Payment in Ecuador, when adapted to a hypothetical Unemployment Insurance model, has had a tenuous protective impact on the population during the study period, that extends between 1990 and 2016. Its evolution is marked by very low coverage level and constantly fluctuating values that where drastically altered by the dollarization of the economy. Despite this, in the last years of the study there is a marked upward trend in the model’s index values, motivated by the increase in the number of workers covered by this program. When comparing the model with international values, it is evident that the Ecuadorian protections are far below those of more socially responsible countries.
