LA POBLACIÓN DEL ECUADOR EN LA TRANSICIÓN, 1846–1889
Keywords:

The time of transition is marked by the end of the colonial world and modern times, which would begin from 1890 with liberalism. One of the important aspects that marks this period is the relation population=institutional growth, that is, parish and cantons, because the growth of the latter is based on population growth, so they are the thermometer to measure whether the demographic information contained in the reports and memories is valid or can be valid. Thus, the aim of this article is to make a brief tour of Ecuadorian demography during the 19th century, until its last decade, in order to contrast existing figures and opinions on the feasibility and credit of existing official sources on population accounting by trying to return their nature to the document, i.e. not to see regional counts, because the region did not exist as an analytical category, but the one that there was, the political jurisdiction that it is basic of “registros parroquiales”.
