Abstract

The objective of this article focuses on analyzing the income of tobacco in New Granada between 1810 and 1825, that is, during the process of Independence and the first years of republican life of Colombia, observing in detail the progress and the vicissitudes, as well as the changes and permanence in this branch of the economy in the midst of the political and military convulsion of the struggle for emancipation. The continuous changes of government generated considerable fluctuations in the economic management and under this context the variations in the regulations and in the internal structure of the branch were continuous. Even with all the difficulties, the state monopoly of this branch was maintained, constituting an important contribution to the process of forming the economic bases of the nascent Republic, besides which it opened the way for a promising stage of liberalization and promotion of the exports.
