Abstract

Juan Montalvo is the best Ecuadorian writer and thinker, on his birth the Day of the Teacher is commemorated, on April 13. He is one of the best Latin American essayists, admired by Rubén Dario, Unamuno, Rodó or Borges; but in Ecuador, his thought is almost unknown. Few recognize the great moral philosopher; but the theologian has not been studied. Reading his texts show that he was deeply a believer; however, he suffered a brutal persecution by the Catholic Church that planted in the Ecuadorian collective uncons - cious the archetypes of Montalvo as an atheist and anti-clerical. The general purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that Juan Montalvo was an erudite theologian and a profound mystic, for which purpose La Mercurial Ecclesiastica or Los Siete Tratados will be reviewed. This essay is important for different sciences such as history, literature and theology.
