In the context of the growth of the economy guided by cocoa, this article explores the demographic evolution of the city and specifically the demographic characteristics that characterized its population from 1780 to the decade of 1920. But beyond the general demographic trend, this article places special attention on the structure of the population of the late Nineteenth century. The regional origin of the population, age, sex, marital status and national and international origin are clearly recorded. The occupation and the life cycles can be reconstructed in a way, as well as the birth-mortality relationship. It Is about understanding the Guayaquil society in its basic structure. In an interrelational and dynamic environment, more than 60.000 or more people lived in the fall of the Nineteenth century, wen the largest cohorts correspond to the people who were between 20 and 30 years. The singles dominated with a very high percentage, 72.38 The “Interioranos” and those born abroad-mainly Peruvians, Colombians and Chinese-occupied more than 30% of the total population.
